To Have And Have Not By Ernest Hemingway Information

The novel keeps The Great depression as the background and revolves around Harry Morgan and how he runs contraband between Cuba and Florida. Due to the prevalent recession and economic forces, Harry is forced into black-marketing. As a result of his financial conditions, Harry is forced to smuggle Chinese immigrants in order to be able to feed his family.

The novel comprises of Hemingway’s’ two earlier short stories as the opening chapters. These stories were "One Trip Across" and "The Tradesman's Return". Instead of narrating the complete story from one person’s perspective, the novel continues with different viewpoints at different times. Different characters are telling the narrative at different points in the story.

It is believed that Ernest regarded this novel as his worst work ever. He is said to have written the book as a part of a contractual obligation and hated it completely. He wrote the complete book in Compleat Angler Hotel on Bimini, in the Bahamas. Though Hemingway did not quite approve of the novel, it went on to become very popular. The novel was even adapted into a film by Howard Hawks by the same name. After this film, there were two other versions of the same novel adapted into films.
