Timeline Of Emily Dickinson


American literature indeed has some great poets and writers to boast of. One such name that is an honor to American literature is that of Emily Dickinson. This poet ushered in a revolution in the filed of poetry with her unique writing style. Here are some of the most important events in the life of the poet.

  • 1830- Emily Dickinson was born on the 10th of December this year. She was born in Amherst, western Massachusetts, USA, in a house called the Homestead. Her grandfather built this house. Emily spent her entire lifetime in this house.
  • 1840- Emily along with her sister Lavinia went to the Amherst Academy, a former boys' school that had opened to female students just two years earlier.
  • 1844- Her cousin and close friend Sophia Holland died in April 1844 because of typhus. The incident had a very traumatizing effect on Emily’s life.
  • 1860s- This was the time when Emily had started to become more and more reclusive. She did not leave Homestead till the time it was absolutely necessary. This period also saw Emily writing fewer poems.
  • 1874- On June 16, 1874, Emily Dickinson’s father Edward Dickinson died of a stroke. The incident left Emily in an absolutely tragic state.
  • 1882- Emily’s mother died on November 14, 1882.
  •  1886- Emily died on 15 May 1886 in Homestead. She is reported to have died because of Bight’s disease.
