One very famous poem by Emily Dickinson is titled as “The Chariot” also known as ‘Because I could not stop for death’. The first paragraph of the poem reads as follows;
“Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.”
A theme of death runs throughout the poem. Though there have been any other writers and poets who have written about life and death, Emily had a very unique perspective about this law of nature.
Another very famous poem by the writer is called “I heard a Fly buzz — when I died.” This poem too concerns death- one of the Dickinson’s most favorite themes. In this poem the poet is hovering between life and death. The fly that is hovering and there is said to be the final and haunting image and reflection of Emily’s life.
While Emily’s poems have been written exceptionally well, none of them carry titles. Today these poems are commonly taught in university and school courses. Because of the absence of the title, the poems are known by the first line or are referred to as a particular number.
