These are the words of the great poet who lived a secluded life, and her death was no different. Death was a common theme or thread that ran through most of Dickinson’s poetry. Emily Dickinson died on May 15, 1886 as a result of persistent illness.
Death was particularly traumatic for Emily Dickinson as she saw a number of deaths in the family during her last years. Emily’s mother died on November 14, 1882. Though she confessed to not be really close to her mother, the death definitely had an impact on Emily. The following year Emily saw the death of Gilbert, who happened to be one of Emily’s favorites.
The line of deaths had a tragic effect on Emily. On June 14, 1884, she suffered from an attack. She fainted while baking in the kitchen and remained unconscious till late hours of the night. As a result of her deteoriating health, Emily Dickinson was confined to her bed during her last years. By this time, Emily had stopped organizing and editing her poems. Though, she did write a few letters in her last stage.
Death finally took a tool and Emily died on May 15, 1886, after several days of worsening symptoms, at the age of 55. She was reported to have died of Bright’s disease by her physician.
