Mark Twain’s original name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Mark Twain was just one of the many pen names that he used. The writer also wrote under the pen name of "Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass" for a series of humorous letters. His sketches were signed under the name of "Josh" until 1863.

Mark Twain was born in Missouri on November 30, 1835. His father was a Tennessee country merchant called John Marshall Clemens. Jane Lampton Clemens was Mark twain’s mother. Twain was born as the sixth of seven children in the family. Only three of his siblings survived childhood.
