The book was published by the Bloomsbury publishing house in London. The book was a huge success and even went on to win the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the prestigious British Book Award. Over five million copies of the book were sold and the Harry potter book had already found a dedicated fan base. The success of the movie convinced filmmakers to adapt the book into a movie.
It was not just the audiences too were in favor of the book. The book was well received by the critics too. New York Times writer Michael Winerip praised the novel saying, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is as funny, moving and impressive as the story behind its writing." However, at the same time the book was even criticized for poor narrative in the last few chapters of the book.
