Rightly called the Father of Electricity, Thomas Alva Edison was born to Sam and Nancy on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio. The light bulb and electricity was one of his major inventions among thousand others. Born in a poor family, Edison had hard times earning his living. But ‘fortune favors those who favor themselves’ was true in case of Edison.

Edison worked for a company and managed to earn a good amount of money and decided to set up a lab at New Jersey in 1876. He began a series of experiments to invent the light bulb for indoor use. His aim was to make a durable filament which would burn and produce bright light. Edison tried different metals like platinum wire, refractory metals and even human hair before he finally invented a better filament in carbonized strips of bamboo. Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor and businessman who developed and invented many devices for welfare of the mankind. He was born on February 11, 1847 and died at the age of 84 years in October 18, 1931 in his home, “Glenmont” in Llewellyn Park in West Orange, New Jersey.    

Edison was a great historic inventor and scientist ever. If we follow his life closely, we can say that more than a scientist, he was a technologist. Edison took great pleasure in inventing new things, not only to earn his living but also to help the society. This immensely talented inventor holds 1093 patents in his name in U.S. as well as many others in U.K. France and Germany. Among all his inventions, electric light was considered as one of his greatest inventions.  He also originated the idea of electric current and successfully generated and implemented electric power to homes, businesses, and factories. Thomas Edison died at the age of 84 in West Orange, New Jersey. He was considered as the greatest inventor of 1800s – 1900s. He had invented more than 1000 devices among which his greatest invention was light bulb.

His other major inventions were the vote recorder, stock quote printer, carbon telegraph transmitter, telegraph repeating machine, generator, DC power plant, phonograph, and kinetoscope many other devices.

Edison was called a wandering mind which ended this three month formal school education. Afterwards, his mother gave him further teaching at home. To help his parents Edison started to sell newspaper at the age of 12 years. However, at this age he lost almost all his hearing powers, though there are several different theories about it. Scarlet fever was one of the prime reasons attributed to this. Edison migrated from city to city in the United States taking available telegraph jobs between 1863 and 1867.
