Born on 22 September 1791, Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis. He focused primarily on the magnetic field around a conductor which carry a DC current and established the base for the magnetic field concept in physics. Faraday proved that magnetic field can affect the rays of light and there was a fundamental relationship between these two occurrences. His electromagnetic rotary devices were implemented in the electric motor technology and were quite a success.
In chemistry, Faraday discovered benzene, examined the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of the bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers, and helped popularized some terminology like as anode, cathode, electrode, and ion. Irrespective of his little official education and limited knowledge of advanced mathematics, Faraday was considered among the greatest scientists in history. He was known as the best experimentalist in the history of science.
Owing to his great scientific knowledge, Faraday was official appointed as the scientific adviser to Trinity House (1836-1865) and Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (1830-1851). Apart from being a great scientist, Faraday was a highly religious person and was a member of the Sandemanian Church, a Christian sect founded in 1730 which demands foe a total faith and commitment.
However, in early 1840s, his health began to deteriorate and he spent less time to research. He died at the age of 76 on 25 August 1867 at Hampton Court. He was given his name to the 'farad', which actually describes a unit of electrical charge but later a unit of electrical capacitance.
