Marie Curie was born in Warsaw on 7th November 1867. She studied physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne and got married to Pierre Curie, a professor of the School of Physics in 1895. The Curie couple worked together investigating more on the work of German physicist Roentgen and French physicist Becquerel on radioactivity.  In July 1898, the Curies invented the new chemical element polonium and later in the same year, they announced the discovery of radium. However, Pierre's life was cut short in 1906 when he was knocked down and killed by a carriage. Marie Curie took over the research and continued with the work which she started along with her husband.

The discovery of radium helped in the understanding of matter and energy. Marie Curie’s newest discovery open up great avenues for science but brought a tremendous change in the field of medical research and treatment. Radium turned out to be an important aspect in the development of x-rays in surgery. Owing to her great contribution, The International Red Cross offered her to head their radiological services.

Despite her great invention and success, she never received enough financial benefits from her work. However, she faced great opposition from other male scientists due to the patriarchal society which prevailed in France. Due to overexposure of high energy radiation, Marie Curie constantly complained of ill health. Finally, she died at the age of 67 years on 4th July 1934 due to leukaemia in Haute Savoie.
