Princess Diana and Prince Charles got engaged on 6 February 1981. Prince Charles proposed her with a walnut sized ring consisting of 14 diamonds and a sapphire. The cost of the ring was estimated to be £30,000. Now we know why the princess said yes immediately.

The princess got married at St Paul Cathedral. Previously, Westminster Abbey was used for royal nuptials. However, St Paul Cathedral offered more seating than Westminster Abbey. The wedding materialized on 29 July 198. More than 750 million people across watched the wedding, which was also popularly known as “The fairytale wedding”. The princess’s gown alone cost £9000. Her wedding gown had 25 foot train and the finest lace.

But who knew that the extra lavish, extravagant would fall apart so soon. Though Charles and Diana do spent some good years of their lives together, however the duo have been reported to have problems throughout. It was reported that Princess Diana even tried to commit suicide several times during the tenure of her marriage. Both Prince Charles and Princess Diana committed adultery during their marriage.

As a result, a wedding that once seemed like a fairytale finally fell apart. The two were at last divorced. And quite like their marriage, the divorce too became a matter of not just national but international interest.
