The former Illinois congressman also tried his hand in the private sector when he served as the chief executive officer of drug manufacturer G.D Searle and co. That was the only time that the Princeton University graduate worked outside the government. However even during his time in the private sector, he still sat on the board of various public and acted as a key advisor to President Ronald Reagan.
Rumsfeld second stint as the secretary of Defense proved to be the most challenging. It was characterized by the September 11 2001 terrorist attacks as well as two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Rumsfeld was widely regarded as one of the main architects of the Iraq war and this eventually led to his exit from Pentagon.
Military analysts pointed out the aftermath of the Iraq war was handled in a fairy pedestrian manner and this led to the eventual resignation of Rumsfeld in December 2006. On a brighter note he is credited with carrying out sweeping reforms to the US military which made it lighter and more effective. He also planned and executed the Iraq and Afghanistan wars which were successful prior to the rise of insurgency attacks.
