Politicians
Guadalupe Victoria was a republican who endeavored to oust the Emperor Iturbide from the throne. He succeeded in this mission to become the first President of Mexico and reigned from 1824 to 1829.
Vincente Lombardo Toledano was a writer, teacher, political activist, union leader who influenced political life in Mexico for close to half a century. Known to be a strong believer in Marxism, Vicente became a presidential contender in 1952 but lost.
Artists
Octavio Paz was a poet, diplomat and writer who won numerous awards as well as the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. To date Paz is highly recognized as one of the greatest figures in literature.
Juan O’Gorman
Juan O’Gorman was an architect and painter who initiated in Mexico the adoption of modern functionalist Architecture with his house designs in 1929. He later developed a new architectural style that combined the Mexican traditional design with Frank Wright’s influential style. Juan’s paintings have often displayed the rich history, landscape, legends and culture of Mexico.
Scientists
Guillermo Camarena devised a system for transmitting and receiving colored pictures over cables. He is credited for being the first to introduce the color television in Mexico, giving a fresh dimension to television technology.
Mario Molina was a precursor to the sighting of the ozone hole in the Antarctic region. His research in dangers of ozone depletion led to the global ban on use of CFCs in refrigerators and aerosol cans. Molina holds eighteen honorary degrees and is a prominent member of different Science organizations.
