Climbed Mt. Everest :
The former Royal New Zealand Air Force navigator and world war two veterans showed interest in mountaineering while still in school. He successfully climbed to the top of Mount Ollivier while still in school. In an interview, Edmund later revealed that the mission to the top of Mount Everest was not a one-day affair. It preceded an initial inspection in 1951 and he was part of this team
Knighted and graces New Zealand Currency :
For his troubles, Edmund knighted in 1953 and made it history. His face now graces the five-pound New Zealand currency and Nepalese citizenship. The man who was hailed as the best New Zealand citizen was not only good at mountaineering but also carried out a number of expeditions.
He reached both the South and North Pole in 1958 where he was the leader of the New Zealand delegation. Edmunds life had by misfortunes. He was married to Louise Mary and blessed with three kids. Tragedy hit the family when his two children died in a plane crash in the capital of Nepal.
State Burial :
Sir Edmund had a large heart and established a charitable organization to help the Nepal people. The curtain came down on the life of this great mountaineer in January 2008 because of heart failure and hence given a state burial.
Sir Edmund remains a great hero!
